Q: Secretary General Liu, this is the second time Shenzhen has hosted a national art exhibition and art design exhibition. The significance of Shenzhen's hosting this time is different. In November last year, Shenzhen was awarded the title of "City of Design" by UNESCO, and a design city will host the national design exhibition. Does the China Artists Association have special considerations?
Answer: As a cutting-edge city in China's reform and opening up, Shenzhen's importance is irreplaceable from both the perspective of geographical coordinates and the demonstration of reform and development. Since the 9th Art Exhibition in 1999, Shenzhen has been a sub exhibition area for three consecutive national art exhibitions. The 9th Art Exhibition is an art and design exhibition, the 10th Art Exhibition is a Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan exhibition, and this year is also a design exhibition, which is very unique in China. This illustrates the important position of Shenzhen in the national cultural and artistic development map.
As one of the organizers of the national art exhibition, the China Artists Association has considered multiple factors when selecting the host cities for each exhibition area. This is because it is the highest standard comprehensive art exhibition at the national level, and it is also a concentrated review of the development status and achievements of art in the past five years. Therefore, the enthusiasm for applications from all over the country is high. Firstly, we need to consider the hosting experience of each applying city. Shenzhen has already held three consecutive national art exhibitions and has accumulated rich experience; Secondly, as you just mentioned, Shenzhen has just become the first "City of Design" named by UNESCO in China. Therefore, Shenzhen has a strong accumulation of design culture, and it is also at the forefront of cultural innovation and cultural system reform in the country; In addition, the Shenzhen Municipal Government, cultural leaders in charge, and cultural departments have positive demands for organizing exhibitions. We have formed a good response and mutual trust, and Shenzhen has made sufficient preparations in the early stage. Therefore, after the closure of the 7th National Congress of the United States last year, after expert evaluation, Shenzhen successfully obtained the right to host the exhibition. Finally, considering the audience of the exhibition, we also believe that Shenzhen is more suitable because it is adjacent to Hong Kong and Macao, which is a good international exchange platform. Moreover, Shenzhen's design resources are relatively concentrated, which is conducive to the promotion of art and design exhibitions. These are all advantages of Shenzhen.
Q: Now, the Design Art Exhibition has entered the stage of re evaluation of its works. Could you please provide specific feedback on your evaluation of the organization and preparation work in Shenzhen.
Answer: Under the leadership of relevant leaders, especially Director Dong and Director Diao, who are specifically responsible for this work, as well as Comrade Liang Yu from the Art Department, and all comrades from Guanshan Yue Art Museum and Hua Art Museum, the organizational work in Shenzhen is very efficient. This reflects that the construction and management level of Shenzhen's cultural team is very high and can withstand the test. I have three personal feelings about our cooperation with Shenzhen this time: firstly, I am moved. Starting from the application for hosting, Shenzhen has been proactive in its work, carefully considering the progress of each stage, promoting orderly progress, and implementing effectively. Taking the preliminary evaluation work as an example, art and design is very different from other categories. Its categories are relatively diverse, including clothing, graphic design, book binding, industry, environmental art, as well as some works that are not clearly classified and commonly referred to as arts and crafts in the past, all of which are included in the art and design exhibition area. This kind of preliminary evaluation work is very complicated, thanks to the organizing committee's sufficient experience in organizing exhibitions, utilizing the organizational resources of several design related art committees of the China Artists Association, simplifying complexity, and completing the preliminary evaluation in Beijing through mailing photos, electronic files, and other means. The leaders and staff from Shenzhen also made a special trip to Beijing to successfully complete the preliminary evaluation work in cooperation with the American Association. Through the preliminary selection, the previously large and diverse works have become clear and orderly, allowing competitive works to be directly sent to the exhibition area for re evaluation. On the one hand, this reduces the pressure of the evaluation work, and at the same time, it reflects the organizing committee's people-oriented and author oriented approach, so that works that are initially selected do not need to be put into production anymore. The professionalism demonstrated by the Shenzhen side has deeply moved me and my colleagues at the Art Association.
The second is emotion. This time, we are coming to Shenzhen with all the judges. The cultural department of Shenzhen has worked together to undertake a very heavy organizational service work, which reflects the humanistic quality and work level of the city. From one perspective, we can see that since entering the new century, Shenzhen has still played a pioneering and exemplary role in many aspects throughout the country. Our cooperation with Shenzhen is very pleasant and satisfactory.
The third is gratitude. From the perspective of the structure of the national art exhibition, thanks to the joint efforts of everyone in all aspects, it is the high flame that everyone gathers firewood, which enables our country's artistic creation and exhibition projects with a sense of the times and a historical mission to be successfully held. All the excellent works of the National Art Exhibition in December will be exhibited at the China National Art Museum. Behind this final exhibition of excellent works, there are so many host cities, institutions, and organizational staff who have put in hard work. Their work has laid a solid foundation for the successful appearance of the Beijing Exhibition. So I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the cities, institutions, and individuals involved in the national art exhibition work.
Q: Thank you to the Secretary General for his encouragement! In the past, the re evaluation judges for art and design exhibitions usually consisted of only a dozen or so experts. The jury for this re evaluation is very large, with over thirty members. May I ask how the China Artists Association has considered it.
Answer: This reflects that our work is also keeping up with the times. Ten years ago, the National Art Exhibition first established an art and design exhibition area, which was a choice made by the China Artists Association based on the actual development of Chinese art and design in the 1990s. At that time, setting up an art and design exhibition area in the National Art Exhibition was a breakthrough, and the scale and level at that time could not be compared to the present. However, the development of art and design categories is relatively fast, much faster than other categories. Now, it is equally important in national art exhibitions as the four main categories of Chinese painting, oil painting, woodblock printing, and sculpture. Its degree of attention may be ranked in the top three along with Chinese painting and oil painting. Therefore, the setting of judges this time is equivalent to the main categories of Chinese painting, oil painting, woodblock printing, and sculpture, and it is a huge structure. In addition, as mentioned earlier, the composition of art and design works is quite complex, with many categories. For example, traditional Chinese painting and oil painting only have one art committee in the art association, while design has five art committees. This is also the reason why there are more judges for re evaluation. At the same time, we have also fully considered the composition of the judges in Shenzhen. There are five judges in the art and design exhibition area of Shenzhen, which is rare in other exhibition areas.
