  • Zhuang Xilong

  • Zhuang Xilong, pen name Jin Yi, hails from Helian Village, Liangying, Chaoyang, Guangdong Province. Born in Shanghai in 1949, he spent 34 years there and worked as a laborer for 17 years. Initially trained in Western painting, he embarked on cartoon creation in 1979. In 1980, his maiden work "Can You Please Give Up Your Seat?", a satire addressing the imbalance between traditional and modern theatrical repertoires, was published in "Satire and Humor" and later reprinted in newspapers and magazines such as "People's Daily" and "Wen Wei Po". It also triggered a strong response at the National Forum on Traditional Opera held that year, leading him to focus primarily on cartoon creation thereafter.

In 1983, he was transferred from Shanghai to Shenzhen Special Zone Daily as an art editor and later became the head of the art department, during which time he produced a vast array of cartoons. From 1984 to 1987, he won the "National Award for Excellent News" four consecutive times; and from 1984 to 1993, he secured the "First Prize for Excellent News Cartoon in Guangdong Province" ten times in a row. In 1992 and 1993, he received the Annual Outstanding Works Award from "People's Daily · Satire and Humor". In 1993, he was granted a special government allowance by the State Council, and in 1996, his work "Wrong Truncation" was selected as a question for the national college entrance examination's Chinese language test.

He has published several monographs, including "A Selection of Zhuang Xilong's Cartoons," "A Collection of Zhuang Xilong's Cartoons," "Zhuang Xilong's Cartoons," "Illustrated Social Phenomena," "Illustrated Business Philosophy," "The Collection of Needle Tips," and "Three Men Walking Together."
