  • A Brief History of 20 Years
  • 1997

    On June 25th, the Guan Shanyue Art Museum was completed and opened to the public, with over 3,000 people from all walks of life both at home and abroad attending the opening ceremony. Several art exhibitions were held concurrently, including "Guan Shanyue's Donated Works Exhibition," "Works Exhibition of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts," "Works Exhibition of Guangdong Painting Academy," "Works Exhibition of Guangzhou Painting Academy," and "Works Exhibition of Shenzhen Painting Academy." Additionally, five monographs were published, namely "Collection of Guan Shanyue's Works," "Anthology of Guan Shanyue's Poems," "Research on Guan Shanyue," "Biography of Guan Shanyue," and "Master of Traditional Chinese Painting: Guan Shanyue."The art museum established its academic focus on "Guan Shanyue and Lingnan School of Painting Research."

    1998

    The "First Shenzhen International Ink Painting Biennale" was held, which was the largest international ink painting exchange exhibition in China at that time. Other exhibitions included "Guan Shanyue's Figure Paintings Exhibition," "Guan Shanyue's Landscape Scrolls Exhibition," and a collaborative exhibition featuring works by Zhao Shao'ang, Li Xiongcai, Guan Shanyue, and Yang Shanshen.

    1999

    The art museum hosted the "Ninth National Fine Arts Exhibition Art Design Exhibition," marking the first time the National Fine Arts Exhibition included a design art exhibition area. The art museum was awarded the "Best Exhibition Area Organization Award." Additional exhibitions included "Intercontinental Journey: Guan Shanyue's Overseas Scenery Paintings Exhibition."

    2000

    The renowned Chinese painter, educator, and representative of the Lingnan School of Painting, Guan Shanyue, passed away at the age of 89. In his memory, The art museum held the "Guan Shanyue's Artistic Achievements Exhibition." The "Ludwig and Erna Bechtler Collection: International Art from the National Art Museum of China in Shenzhen" exhibition was also held, marking The art museum's first Western modern art exhibition.

    2001

    The "Revolutionary Historical Themes Fine Arts Exhibition from the National Art Museum of China" was held, which was the first time these works were exhibited in Shenzhen. This exhibition earned The art museum its first Innovation Award from the municipal cultural system. Other exhibitions included "The Footprints of a Master: Guan Shanyue's Artistic Life Exhibition," "In Memory of Our Mentor: Guan Shanyue's Students' Invited Exhibition," and "Guan Shanyue Art Museum's Fine Works Exhibition."

    2002

    A series of commemorative activities were held to mark The art museum's fifth anniversary, featuring exhibitions like "Humanistic Concern: An Academic Exhibition of Guan Shanyue's Figure Paintings," "Guan Shanyue Art Museum's 5th Anniversary Documentation Exhibition," and "The Fourth Exhibition in the Series of 20th Century Chinese Art Masters: Inheritance and Development—Gao Jianfu's Paintings Exhibition." The art museum also received the third-place Innovation Award from the municipal cultural system. Additionally, The art museum's Guan Shanyue collection was exhibited for the first time abroad (in Seoul) during the World Cup's "Asia Art Festival."

    2003

    The art museum curated the "03 Shenzhen Design Exhibition," which established "Graphic Design in China" as a biennial event, contributing to Shenzhen's progress as a "City of Design." This exhibition won the Shenzhen Cultural System Innovation Award, and The art museum became the first in China to adopt "design" as its academic focus. Another exhibition, "Passionate Years: A Special Exhibition of Mao Zedong's Poetry and Revolutionary Holy Land Works," preliminarily established the academic direction of "Guan Shanyue and 20th Century Chinese Art Research."

    2004

    The art museum hosted the "Tenth National Fine Arts Exhibition Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Invited Works Exhibition," marking the first time the National Fine Arts Exhibition included an exhibition area for invited works from these regions. Other exhibitions included "Building a New China: A Special Exhibition of Chinese Paintings from the 1950s to Mid-1960s" and "Ink Affection: Sino-Korean Ink Art Exchange Exhibition," which established the Korean Ihjai Art Museum as The art museum's first overseas friendly art museum, leading to 13 consecutive exchange exhibitions.

    2005

    The "Sifang Salon" series of academic lectures began, which is the earliest and still ongoing public welfare art lecture organized by a domestic art museum. It was awarded the "National Art Museum Development Support Program · Excellent Public Education and Promotion Project" by the Ministry of Culture in 2011.

    Held the thematic exhibitions of "Earthshaking Revelation - The Discovery of Dunhuang and the Transformation of Chinese Art History and the Development of Artistic Language in the 20th Century" and "Borrowing from the Past to Open Up the Future - Guan Shanyue's Dunhuang Sketches Academic Thematic Exhibition".

    Held the "Xiaoping and Shenzhen - A Commemorative Exhibition for the 100th Anniversary of Comrade Deng Xiaoping's Birth", which won the Special Prize for Innovation in the Municipal Cultural System.

    2006

    Clarified the academic orientation of "focusing on Guan Shanyue's art, 20th-century Chinese art research, and contemporary design art research" and the development strategy of "research as the leader, collection as the soul, exhibition as the means, and education and promotion as the purpose".

    Launched the cultural volunteer service project, which was the first cultural volunteer project in Shenzhen's cultural system. It won the "National Art Museum Development Support Program · Excellent Public Education and Promotion Project" by the Ministry of Culture in 2010 and the "Excellent Volunteer of Art Museum" award by the National Art Museum Professional Committee in 2013.

    Held exhibitions such as "Capturing the Essence and Vitality of Nature through Sketching from Life- Guan Shanyue Art Exhibition", "Set High Standards for Oneself - Huang Binhong Art Exhibition", and "Holger Matthias Poster Exhibition".

    2007

    Organized a series of activities for the 10th anniversary of The art museum's establishment, including the "Guan Lao and Guan Shanyue Art Museum Documentary Exhibition" and the "White Clouds And Plunging Waterfall - An Art Exhibition Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Huang Junbi's Birth". Co-organized the first "National Art Museum Work Conference".

    Held the "Graphic Design in China 07 Exhibition" and won the Excellent Organization Award for the third "Creativity in December" series of activities in the city.

    2008

    Closed for renovation, transforming from an "elegant palace" to an "art sharing space".

    Held the "Openness and Communication - A Forum on Chinese Art Criticism in the 30 Years of Reform and Opening-up".

    Held the "180 Cubes in Shenzhen - Harmonious Human Settlements (Shenzhen, London, Hong Kong) Space Design Competition" and won the Creativity Award for the fourth "Creativity in December" series of activities in Shenzhen.

    2009

    Reopened to the public, hosted the "11th National Fine Arts Exhibition Art Design Exhibition and 2009 (Shenzhen) International Design Forum", and held exhibitions such as "Exotic Journey: Guan Shanyue's Foreign Sketching Exhibition", "Fusion: Shenzhen-Hong Kong Design Invitation Exhibition", and an art museum forum with the theme of "A New Era, A New Art Museum - Constructing an Art Museum with Chinese Characteristics".

    Published "Exotic Journey - Guan Shanyue's Foreign Sketching Exhibition", "Chinese Master Paintings · Guan Shanyue" (Chinese and English editions), and "Era Classics - Guan Shanyue and 20th Century Chinese Art Research Collection".

    2010

    "I Am Indebted to the Art - Exhibition of Wu Guanzhong's Works from the Shanghai Art Museum Collection" was the first appearance of China Mobile's "GoTone Art Appreciation Season", and the event won the "Cultural Innovation Award" in Shenzhen.

    Hosted the "National Major Historical Theme Art Creation Project Touring Exhibition · Shenzhen".

    2011

    Our art museum was selected as one of the first nine national key art museums by the Ministry of Culture.

    Held the "Brushwork Should Follow the Times - A Life Exhibition of Guan Shanyue, a Master of the Lingnan School of Painting", which won the "National Art Museum Development Support Program · National Key Art Museum Excellent Exhibition Project" by the Ministry of Culture in 2011.

    Held the "Rich in Splendor - Dunhuang Art Exhibition" and the "2011 New Generation! University Student Image Art Festival", which were important cultural and artistic activities during the Shenzhen Universiade.

    2012

    A series of events were held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Guan Shanyue's birth and the 15th anniversary of the establishment of Guan Shanyue Art Museum, including "Shanyue Danqing - Art Exhibition Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Guan Shanyue's Birth" (displayed in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Beijing), "So Charming Are the Landscapes - Exhibition of Fine Artworks by Fu Baoshi from the Nanjing Museum", "A Life in Comics - Hua Junwu's Works Exhibition", and "Documentary Exhibition for the 15th Anniversary of Guan Shanyue Art Museum".

    "Shanyue Danqing - Art Exhibition Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Guan Shanyue's Birth" was selected for the "2012 National Art Museum Collection Exhibition Season" and awarded as an outstanding exhibition project.

    The first issue of "The Complete Works of Guan Shanyue" was released, which is the largest, most comprehensive, and authoritative collection of Guan Shanyue's art (nine volumes) in history. It received support from the 2012 National Publishing Fund and won the "5th China Outstanding Publications Award - Book Award" in 2015.

    An international academic symposium titled "Guan Shanyue and Chinese Art in the 20th Century - Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Guan Shanyue's Birth" (held in Beijing), a "Subject and Promotion - National Art Media Summit Forum," and the first "National Symposium on the Work of Famous Artists' Memorials (Art Museums)" organized by the Ministry of Culture were held.

    As the executive organization, we hosted the "First China Design Exhibition" sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and the Shenzhen Municipal Government. The project was awarded the "Excellent Exhibition Project of National Key Art Museums" and the first place "Excellence Award" by the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.

    2013

    "The journey of life is especially difficult- 1940s Sketching Works Exhibition by Pang Xunqin, Wu Zuoren, Guan Shanyue, and Sun Zongwei in the Southwest and Northwest China" was held and won the "Excellent Exhibition Project" in the 2013-2014 National Art Museum Excellent Project Selection by the Ministry of Culture.

    "City of Design, Let Dreams Fly - Shenzhen Design Decade Documentary Exhibition" was selected for the "National Art Museum Collection Exhibition Season" in 2013 by the Ministry of Culture.

    Two youth art projects, "On the Road: Nominated Exhibition of Chinese Young Artists' Works and Young Critics' Forum" and "Youth Impression - Guan Shanyue Art Museum's Nominated Exhibition of Fine Brushwork Paintings," were held.

    2014

    The Guan Shanyue Art Museum Council was established, making Our art museum the first public art museum in Shenzhen to establish a council.

    "Southern Breeze, Northern Harvest: Guan Shanyue's Beijing Sketching Exhibition" (held in Beijing and Shenzhen) was selected for the "National Art Museum Collection Exhibition Season" in 2014 by the Ministry of Culture and won the "Excellent Exhibition Project."

    "The Realm of Viewing - Artistic General Knowledge Sharing" won the "Excellent Public Education Project" in the 2013-2014 National Art Museum Excellent Project Selection by the Ministry of Culture.

    "On the Road: Nominated Exhibition of Chinese Young Artists' Works and Young Critics' Forum" was awarded the "Excellent Exhibition Project of National Key Art Museums."

    2015

    Our art museum passed the reassessment of the National Key Art Museums by the Ministry of Culture and became the first executive vice-chairman unit of the Guangdong Art Museum Association.

    "“Brushes as Blades of Passion and Revenge — Exhibition of Guan Shanyue's Paintings to Commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the Victory in the Anti-Japanese War”" was selected for the "National Art Museum Collection Exhibition Season" in 2015 by the Ministry of Culture and won the "Excellent Exhibition Project."

    "Grow Up Together - Annil Children's Art Exhibition" won the "Excellent Public Education Project" in the 2015 National Art Museum Excellent Project Selection by the Ministry of Culture.

    "Passing on the Torch of Cultural Heritage - 2015 Research Exhibition of Famous Masters in Chinese Freehand Oil Painting School" was held.

    2016

    "Unfold the painting and see a new landscape——The Era Scenery in the Long Scroll of Chinese Painting in the 1950s" was selected for the Ministry of Culture's "2016 National Museum Collection Fine Works Exhibition Season" and awarded as an Excellent Exhibition Project.

    The "Jigadava Works Donation and Collection Project" received funding support from the Ministry of Culture's "2016 National Fine Arts Works Collection and Donation Incentive Program."

    As the executing organization, we hosted the "Second China Design Exhibition and Public Art Special Exhibition."

    "Temporary Storage:Interaction Between the Mind and the Subject Matter- Chinese Contemporary Art Exhibition" (held in London in June 2017) received support from the Ministry of Culture's 2016 National Art Fund.

    The "Interconnection between Art Museums and Schools" was selected as the "Excellent Public Education Nomination Project" in the 2016 National Art Museum Excellent Project Selection organized by the Ministry of Culture.

    Our art museum has been identified as one of the first batch of pilot units for the development of cultural and creative products of cultural relics units in Guangdong Province (a total of 9 units) and one of the national pilot units for the development of cultural and creative products of cultural relics units (a total of 22 units).
