  • Nature as Teacher, Mountains and Rivers as Inspiration
  • The painter Wu Haicheng has had a lifelong passion for painting. For many years, he has taken the "Mustard Seed Garden" (a classic Chinese painting manual) as his teacher, diligently honing his skills and laying a solid foundation for his future creations. In 1973, his work "Green Sea and Silver Dragon" already stood out prominently in the art world, attracting much attention from the painting circles. Since then, he has progressed from being an elementary school teacher to teaching in middle schools and elderly universities, nurturing countless students with his art. Over the past four decades, he has never stopped painting, devoting himself to exploring the techniques of landscape painting especially after his retirement.

For decades, the artist has adhered to the principle of "Nature as Teacher, Finding Inspiration in the Heart." While immersing himself in the study of traditional ink painting techniques, he has never been constrained by the past, striving for breakthroughs in his art. He understands that to become a truly accomplished painter, one must not only "read ten thousand books" but also "travel ten thousand miles" to broaden the scope of painting subjects and enrich one's knowledge. To this end, during his more than a decade of retirement, he has relentlessly pursued outdoor sketching. He has climbed Mount Taihang eight times, visited the Three Gorges seven times, traveled to Huangyao six times, and explored Western Hunan five times. In addition, he has left his brushstrokes on the landscapes of Xinjiang, Gansu, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, Taiwan, as well as the eastern and western regions of Guangdong. In pursuit of broader horizons, he has also braved long journeys to South Africa, Egypt, the shores of the Baltic Sea, Europe, Southeast Asia, Oceania, and other places, returning home with hundreds of sketches from his travels.

While adhering to the Tao of nature and expressing his true feelings, the artist also validates ancient painting techniques through practice. In particular, he pays attention to absorbing the essence of Lingnan School painting and drawing on the strengths of various schools in his inheritance. When he wields his brush and applies ink to paper, his style is seasoned and skilled, with rules following his heart, truly reaching the pinnacle of his craft.
