  • Article source: Shenzhen Business Daily, October 12, 2009

  • Shenzhen, the "City of Design", welcomed for the first time members from the other five "Cities of Design" members of the UNESCO Global Creative City Network Alliance yesterday. Designers from the six "design capitals" of Berlin, Montreal, Buenos Aires, Kobe, Nagoya, and Shenzhen gathered in Pengcheng. They attended the opening ceremony of the 11th National Art Exhibition and Art Design Exhibition, and participated in the international design forum titled "Shared Space - Reflection and Outlook on Design Shared Value in the Context of Globalization" held at the Shenzhen Museum in the afternoon.

Shenzhen is the only city in China to enter the global creative city network. Since winning the title of "City of Design", Shenzhen has once again set sail on a brand new international platform. The collective arrival of the members of the "City of Design" has once again aggregated new energy for the development of Shenzhen's design, allowing Shenzhen to move forward in sync with the world on the road to building a creative city.

     Accepted, affirmed, and actively integrated

The five international design industry experts who came to Shenzhen this time come from five "design capitals", including Professor Ryojiro Saga from Kobe Design University's School of Product Design, Professor Andrei Drusi from the School of Environmental Design at the University of Quebec Montreal, President of Shengu Design Company Ryder Kamiya, Design Management Manager Anaheim Lundina from Buenos Aires International Design Center, and Tierman Tumon, the head and partner of the coordinating architectural and spatial design firm and one of the initiators of "Creative Berlin".

At the end of last year, Shenzhen's application to join the UNESCO Creative City Network was successfully completed after nearly two years of hard work. Shenzhen has become the 16th member of the Global Creative City Network and the first city in China to join the network. After being awarded the title, Shenzhen accelerated its pace of integration into international online platforms. In June of this year, representatives from Shenzhen went to Lyon, France to attend an internal member meeting of the UNESCO Global Creative City Network. They submitted the plan for the 2010 UNESCO Global Creative City Network Conference, which was unanimously approved by the member cities. Ms. Cabeth, a cultural project official from the UNESCO Beijing office who arrived in Shenzhen yesterday to participate in the forum, said that Shenzhen has developed into one of the most important cities in the design industry and believes that Shenzhen will make new contributions to the diversity of world culture. She said that Shenzhen has begun to play an important role in the entire creative city network. As an emerging "design capital", Shenzhen will represent China to hold the 2010 Global Creative City Network Conference in December next year, with the theme of "New Technology, New Media, and Creative City Development Strategy".

Chen Xinliang, Deputy Director of the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Director of the Organizing Committee for this International Design Forum, stated that Shenzhen regards design as a "new culture and living tradition" naturally formed in the city, and also sees design as a driving force for the new round of urban development. As a new member of the alliance, look forward to better cooperation and exchange with international creative cities. Wang Xiaoming, Deputy Director of Shenzhen Creative Culture Center, said that Shenzhen is fully integrating into the big platform of the Creative City Network. Shenzhen designers embrace and absorb advanced concepts with an open mindset, inspiring new creativity. I hope that various creative cities can further integrate and exchange ideas, exchange ideas, and develop together.

     Shenzhen design is refreshing

Yesterday morning, five guests from the "City of Design" visited the Guanshan Yue Art Museum to attend the opening ceremony of the 11th National Art Exhibition · Art and Design Exhibition, and carefully appreciated the exhibited works. heard that in this exhibition, the proportion of Shenzhen design works is quite high. They were very impressed and gave some refreshing evaluations of Shenzhen design works.

As a renowned exhibition and architectural designer in Germany, Tillman Tumon was a key member of Berlin's application for UNESCO's "City of Design" and also the founder and executive director of "Creative Berlin". "Creative Berlin" is an exchange platform serving Berlin designers to showcase creative works from various aspects of Berlin's design field. As an international agency network, it initiates and organizes various design projects in Germany and overseas. By gathering the ideas of numerous designers and implementing them, the creative industry has become a key economic factor in Berlin's urban development, establishing a reputation and earning the title of "City of Design". Tilman Tumon told reporters that he has been to Shenzhen for the third time and has established close cooperation with Shenzhen design companies. In January of this year, he officially signed a strategic partnership agreement with Shenzhen Langtu Design and established the Langtu Alliance, a space design agency. His evaluation of Langtu Design Company is "very professional", and their case studies, especially the proposals they provide to clients, are consistent with the European design companies they represent in terms of philosophy, work methods, and operational techniques. Tilman Tumon sighed, "China can also have such advanced design companies."

Everyone has their own insights into the "City of Design"

The arrival of five international guests also brought their respective successful experiences, and the reporter interviewed several of them yesterday. Anaheim Lundina, Design Management Manager at the Buenos Aires International Design Center, believes that "design must better serve people's lives. We always focus on design fields that are directly related to ordinary citizens, such as fashion design, architectural design, interior design, industrial design, and so on." She laughs, "Putting people first in everything, only when our designed products can comprehensively improve people's quality of life, can they be attractive."

Kobe, like Shenzhen, was also awarded the title of "City of Design" by UNESCO in 2008. Professor Yoshihiro Sagara from the Faculty of Product Design at Kobe Design University explained that as early as the 1970s, Kobe had already begun the path of design. In 1973, Kobe proposed the concept of a fashion city. Starting to build a "fashion city" around Kobe Port, building clothing wholesale markets and clothing art museums in the Rokka area, and cultivating clothing designers and craftsmen. In 2006, they successfully held the 8th Kobe Fashion Week and proposed the concept of a "gathering city". Wang Xiaoming stated that the development experience of creative industries in these cities has opened up an infinite creative journey for Shenzhen, which is currently undergoing the construction of the "City of Design".

"Shared Space" in the Global Context

In the context of globalization, design itself has become a globally shared value, and its influence is ubiquitous. They are changing our way of life and shaping the future of the cities and world we inhabit. The International Design Forum on "Shared Space - Reflection and Outlook on the Shared Value of Design in the Context of Globalization" was held from the afternoon of October 11th to the morning of October 12th at the Shenzhen Museum. In addition to these five representatives from the "City of Design", experts in the domestic design and art industry also discussed topics such as design and city, design and new economy, and design and ethics.

The reporter also saw the figures of a group of famous designers from Shenzhen, including Zeng Jun and Zhang Dali, at the forum yesterday. They stated that this forum is a great opportunity to exchange and interact more with guests from the international "design capital" city.

Yesterday afternoon, two representatives from the "City of Design" gave speeches. Ryojiro Saga first introduces "Kobe's Global Design". Subsequently, one of the initiators of "Creative Berlin", Tierman Tumon, gave a speech titled "Knowledge Sharing, Global Thinking, and Localization Behavior: A Case Study of a Globally Operated Design Institution.". In the forum that will continue on the morning of the 12th, the other three representatives will also appear one after another. Andre Drusi from Montreal will explain the new changes in industrial design in Quebec and the impact of globalization on the business model of design products; Ryder Kamiya will discuss various aspects of Nagoya's design in the context of the "City of Design"; Anaheim is sharing with you how public policies can promote the development of the creative industry.
