As the founder of modern design education in China, Lei Guiyuan taught for 62 years (1927-1989) and successively taught at five institutions: National Beiping Art College, National Hangzhou Art College, Sichuan Provincial Art College, Central Academy of Fine Arts, and Central Academy of Arts and Crafts. He was also the main creator of Sichuan Provincial Art College, the only design independent institution in the Republic of China, and the first design higher education institution in New China, Central Academy of Arts and Crafts.

Lei Guiyuan always adheres to the design ideal of art for life, the educational philosophy of integrating action and knowledge, and the artistic characteristics of specialization and versatility. Since the 1920s, he has devoted his entire life to the scientific construction of the emerging design discipline of "patterns", and regards himself as an eternal "teacher", researching for teaching, promoting teaching through research, pursuing inclusiveness, learning from each other, applying what he has learned, combining theory with practice, and constantly exploring design practices rich in the spirit of the times.

For Lei Guiyuan, there is no clear boundary between painting, patterns, and design. In his works, modern art can expand the aesthetic concepts of traditional crafts (such as lacquer painting, wax printing, etc.), and the rhythmic patterns of traditional patterns can also become the formal language of painting, making it intriguing and decorative (such as character decoration paintings with part-time writing).

His painting creations are very diverse, from oil painting creations influenced by Western modern art, especially the French decorative art movement in the 1930s, to pattern design and decorative painting and oil painting creations that organically combine ethnic elements with modern life in the 1940s; From the concise and fresh watercolor sketches and sketches in the early days of the founding of the People's Republic of China, to the vivid and decorative Chinese paintings and watercolor creations in his later years, it is evident that Lei Guiyuan, like the most representative old masters of the academy such as Zhang Guangyu, Pang Xunquan, Zhang Ding, Wu Lao, Zheng Ke, and Zhu Danian, are all masters of both design and art.

On site opening ceremony

On the afternoon of April 17, 2025, at 2:30 pm, the opening ceremony of the exhibition was held in the lobby of Guanshanyue Art Museum. And Mr. Hang Jian, a humanities professor at Tsinghua University, and Mr. Zhang Jingsheng, director of the editorial office of the "Chinese Modern Art and Design Academic Thought Series" at Tsinghua University Academy of Fine Arts, donated a set of "Chinese Modern Art and Design Academic Thought Series" on behalf of Tsinghua University Academy of Fine Arts. Director Chen Junyu presented the "Collection Certificate" on behalf of Guan Shanyue Art Museum. Both sides will continue to deepen cooperation between museums and schools, and jointly promote the development of art research and public aesthetic education.
