Looking back at the history of the development of Chinese art since the new era, Guang jun should be a representative painter. The Guang jun generation happened to have experienced “the Cultural Revolution”, traversed the "scar flow", witnessed the "new era", and also experienced the artistic trend of the mid-1980s. For this generation, art is no longer something deliberately created, but has become a natural state in life.
As is well known, Guang jun is a printmaker who began participating in and organizing various printmaking activities in the late 1970s. From an academic perspective, the printmakers of the Guang jun generation are practitioners and witnesses of the transformation of Chinese printmaking from the social form before and after the founding of the People's Republic of China to the academic form after the mid-1980s; From a personal perspective, Guang Jun is a diligent painter who was one of the earliest artists in the Chinese printmaking industry to study abroad. He has been influenced by systematic Western art trends and has an open artistic philosophy. As the director of the Printmaking Art Committee of the Chinese Artists Association, he is also an important printmaking activist.
Undoubtedly, Guang Jun is also an oil painter. Guang jun's oil painting tells the audience that he is a painter who draws with his mind. For Guang jun, the types of paintings are just different dialects, and the techniques are just different means. Whether it's his oil paintings, printmaking, or sketching, they are just one way. Guang jun is most afraid of being "returned to the pile", and his art also emphasizes freedom, lightness, and a playful interest worth pondering. Therefore, perhaps the term "artist", which is relatively free, is more appropriate for him.
The Guan Shanyue Art Museum has long been committed to exploring and researching 20th century Chinese art and contemporary visual art. As a representative painter of the cross century era, Guang Jun is the focus of our research this year. We hope that through the case study of Guang jun, we can vividly demonstrate China's artistic changes from the new era to the present from one side, and propose meaningful thinking on the proposition of "the essence of art".
