  • In the 1940s, the Chinese nation was experiencing the deepest suffering and turmoil. The full-scale outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression forced some intellectuals and artists to relocate to the rear areas, struggling to travel through western regions such as Guangxi, Guizhou, Yunnan, Sichuan, Gansu, and Qinghai. They gained a new understanding of western China through the integration of war avoidance migration and travel sketching; Especially the discovery of Dunhuang and the study of ethnic culture have effectively changed the traditional Chinese art history view dominated by literati painting, and provided specific experience for the exploration and development of modern Chinese art language. Artists have opened up a new space in the west - an art space that embodies the fusion of regional and ethnic characteristics, different from the "otherworldly world" of Central Plains culture.

The exhibition showcases the works of four artists, Pang Xunqin, Wu Zuoren, Guan Shanyue, and Sun Zongwei, who traveled in western China in the 1940s. These precious artworks not only capture the natural and cultural landscape of modern western China, but also showcase the outstanding efforts made by that generation of artists to explore and innovate the language of modern Chinese art.
