Since the 1980s, Wang Jian has been shuttling and wandering between ancient, modern, central, and western cultures with his keen vision and insight. He has long been interested in and deeply studied traditional Chinese art, Western classical, and contemporary art, giving him unique insights and understanding in both calligraphy and painting, forming a unique appearance.
For a long time, Mr. Wang Jian has been dedicated to teaching and researching knowledge, rarely participating in exhibitions and activities, and his works rarely appear. This exhibition selected works from both calligraphy and painting by the gentleman. Calligraphy mainly consists of works from around 2000, while painting includes works from around the 1990s and recent works. The exhibited works are not the complete picture of Wang Jian's calligraphy and painting art. Instead, we have selected his calligraphy and painting at different stages to observe the interweaving and presentation of their processes. However, we can also identify his exploration orientation in calligraphy and painting, thus discovering Wang Jian's research on the interrelationship between calligraphy and painting.
Because Wang Jian has been engaged in graduate teaching of "calligraphy and seal carving art" for a long time, his teaching philosophy is to adhere to the cultivation of traditional Chinese culture and aesthetic consciousness, while also advocating and encouraging students to actively participate in the activities and practices of modern and contemporary art. In 2010, the research direction of "Comparison between Calligraphy and Painting" was added, so his teaching philosophy and academic ideas are worth studying. Moreover, Wang Jian also serves as the director of the Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, organizing and planning a series of exhibitions and academic activities related to modern and contemporary art, with a particular emphasis on the contemporary research of traditional Chinese art, which has had an important influence in the academic community.
Mr. Wang Jian graduated from the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts in 1982. In 1981, a highly modern calligraphy solo exhibition was held in Beijing. Received the respect of Mr. Wu Guanzhong, Dean Zhang Ding, Vice Dean Chen Shuliang, and Mr. Pang Xunqin. This exhibition is the earliest, most important, and most personal artistic activity in the history of modern Chinese calligraphy, and also the most important page in the history of modern Chinese calligraphy.
