  • The just concluded Sixth Plenary Session of the 17th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China proposed the goal of cultural reform and development by 2020, marking a new stage in the development of China's cultural cause. On such a memorable day, the 2011 "Invitational Exhibition of Chinese Painting by Famous Chinese Artists" will be exhibited at the Guanshan Yue Art Museum in Shenzhen, a national key art museum. This exhibition is an annual permanent art exhibition led by the Education, Science, Culture and Health Working Committee of the Standing Committee of the Shenzhen Municipal People's Congress, in collaboration with the Shenzhen Bureau of Culture, Culture and Tourism, the Shenzhen Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference on Culture, History and Learning, and the Shenzhen Federation of Literary and Art Circles. It showcases the landscape, figure, and flower and bird paintings created by six famous Henan painters, Ma Guoqiang, Yuan Rubo, Xie Bingyi, Feng Shuguang, Lian Junzhou, and Shi Xingkun, in recent years. It is the first concentrated appearance of Henan Chinese painting in Shenzhen!

Chinese painting has a long and rich history, originating from a systematic system for thousands of years. It is the mainstream of Eastern painting, the embodiment of national spirit, and the accumulation of Chinese culture. Its most prominent feature is the formation of unique forms of expression and traditional brushwork in Chinese painting. This is actually the genetic inheritance of national culture, and also the spiritual embodiment of the aesthetic ideas of Chinese painters. Henan, located in the Central Plains, has a rich traditional cultural heritage and can be said to be a microcosm of the historical development of Chinese society and culture. This place has a unique geographical advantage, which not only accepts the vast and profound grandeur of the Northern School, but also draws on the fresh and delicate brushwork skills of the Southern School, thus achieving compatibility between the North and the South, gradually forming its own characteristics of the Central Plains. Therefore, their works have both the strong, robust, and rich stimulation and tension of the north, as well as the introverted characteristics of the south's enduring taste, balance of firmness and softness, and emphasis on the cultural connotation of brushwork. This compatible style can be seen in the works of Henan painters exhibited this time.

As far as Chinese painting is concerned, the three categories of character, landscape, and flower and bird painting in Henan have different development trajectories. Most of the Henan figure painters have received college education, with rigorous and solid modeling skills and rich expressive skills. A group of outstanding ink and wash figure painters such as Ma Guoqiang and Yuan Rubo have emerged. Ma Guoqiang, as the Chairman of the Henan Literature and Art Federation, the Provincial Artists Association, and the Provincial Chinese Painters Association, has made outstanding contributions to the development of Henan culture, especially the fine arts industry. He is an academic leader in the Chinese painting industry in Henan and enjoys high popularity both domestically and internationally. His figure paintings integrate traditional ink painting techniques with modern painting concepts, with a focus on realism, profound modeling skills, and elegant and vivid brushstrokes. He possesses both the rigor of academic painting and the ethereal spirit of Chinese literati painting, especially in his mastery and application of lines, which has a distinct personal style. Mr. Yuan Rubo is currently the director, professor, and graduate supervisor of the Institute of Fine Arts at the School of Art, Henan University. He is also the director of the Figure Painting Art Committee of the Henan Artists Association. His works mainly focus on ink freehand brushwork, with accurate and vivid character designs and profound brush and ink cultivation. What is particularly remarkable is that he has always adhered to the tradition of realistic painting, faced the spiritual world of contemporary people, and achieved remarkable results.

In terms of landscape painting, Henan landscape painters have made efforts to explore and practice, and have made changes based on reflecting the aesthetic ideas and ink spirit of Chinese painting. They have abandoned the reclusiveness and retro style of literati painting and found modern vocabulary that is suitable for the psychology of contemporary people. The works exhibited this time by Mr. Xie Bingyi, Dean of Henan Academy of Calligraphy and Painting, Director of China Artists Association, and Vice Chairman of Henan Artists Association, are mainly based on the landscapes of the Central Plains. He skillfully uses traditional techniques such as texturing and erasing, with black, red, and purple as the main tones. His brushstrokes are deep, vigorous, and solemn, depicting the vastness and coherence of the mountains and rivers. The portrayal of the vast and rugged simplicity of the Taihang Mountains gives his works a sense of grandeur and vitality, a broad spirit, and a bold beauty, imbued with profound and profound implications. As the director of the Zhengzhou Art Museum, director of the Zhengzhou Painting Academy, executive director of the Henan Artists Association, and vice chairman of the Henan Chinese Painting Association, Mr. Feng Shuguang's works strive to express the natural charm of the Central Plains, abandoning trivial details and emphasizing the grand and panoramic composition. Thousands of slopes and beams grow freely, mountains and rivers are random, and the strokes are vigorous and grand, reflecting the characteristics of the Central Plains with a sense of historical depth and vicissitudes. From his works, we not only see the magnificent scenery of the Central Plains, feel the charm of ink freehand painting, but also feel the simple spiritual world of painters.

In terms of flower and bird painting, Henan has a relatively large lineup, and many people have emerged in the national painting industry. Lian Junzhou, as the executive director of the Henan Flower and Bird Painting Research Association, the executive director of the Zhengzhou Artists Association, and the vice chairman of the Zhengzhou Artists Association, has a pure taste and elegant style in his paintings. In addition to paying close attention to life, he is also good at obtaining the release of brush and ink from sketching, expanding and sublimating his artistic vocabulary. The handsome cultural character displayed in his works is precisely this kind of national cultural righteousness that has undergone traditional smelting and accumulation. As a painter born in the 1970s, Shi Xingkun is currently a member of the China Artists Association, the China Gongbi Painting Research Association, the Deputy Director of the Henan Creation Center of the China Artists Association, and a specially appointed painter of the Henan Provincial Academy of Traditional Chinese Painting. His creations can effectively start with sketching from life, and he can use his own temperament to appreciate the spiritual connotations of the brush and ink tradition. With a simple and unappealing formal language, he strives to create a spiritual atmosphere that reflects his love for life and strong pursuit of formal beauty. Therefore, in his works, ordinary small landscapes and ordinary flowers and trees have extraordinary expressive meanings, which are full of the spirit of traditional bloodline and emit the atmosphere of the times; It not only displays a peaceful and peaceful mentality, but also creates a natural and friendly beauty.

From the works exhibited this time, it can be seen that Chinese painters in Henan advocate academia and individuality, shining brightly in the art world with their unique creative concepts, methods, aesthetic tastes, and work styles. This fully demonstrates the unprecedented vitality and prosperity of traditional Chinese painting in the Central Plains region, reflecting the valuable spirit of painters in their persistent pursuit and unremitting exploration of art. They pay attention to the deep excavation of local culture, always rooting their lives and creations in the fertile soil of Central Plains culture, paying attention to the times, praising life, inheriting tradition, and daring to innovate, creating the brilliance of Henan Chinese painting and making their own contributions to the development of China's art industry.
