Mr. Guan Shanyue (1912-2000) was a famous Chinese painter, art educator, and master of the Lingnan School of Painting in the 20th century. Since the 1930s, Guan Shanyue has been steadfastly practicing the painting philosophy of Master Gao Jianfu, which emphasizes the social function of art reflecting real life and serving the public, by comprehending the East and the West and integrating ancient and modern. After entering the new China, Guan Shanyue advocated the artistic concept of "keeping up with the times" and "innovating and carrying forward the past", constantly exploring the development and innovation of Chinese painting in new cultural contexts and historical backgrounds. Undoubtedly, Guan Shanyue was an artist who gained intellectual and artistic vitality in the revolutionary transformation of Chinese culture in the 20th century. His own artistic experience and changes in artistic thinking to some extent reflect the universal historical conditions and cultural psychology faced by modern Chinese painting since the 20th century.

The precious literature and physical objects presented here are a true record of Mr. Guan Shanyue's artistic life, showcasing the arduous footprints left by Guan's artistic exploration and innovation path. The purpose of this curation is to showcase the artistic characteristics of Guan Shanyue's "brush and ink should follow the times" on the path of art. In terms of display methods, emphasis is placed on combining physical objects, real-life scenes, picture, images, and literature to reproduce Mr. Guan Shanyue's creative process and artistic style.

Mr. Guan Shanyue, with the foresight of an art master, donated his representative works of his life to the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government free of charge. Therefore, the Municipal Party Committee and Government have decided to invest in the construction of an art museum named after Mr. Guan Shanyue's personal name to permanently preserve his works and provide them for the world to study and appreciate. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Mr. Guan Shanyue's birth, in order to express our nostalgia for him, our museum has launched the "Ink and Brush Should Follow the Times - Lingnan Painting School Master Guan Shanyue's Life Exhibition", in order to allow the audience to have a more comprehensive and in-depth understanding of Guan Shanyue's artistic achievements and life journey.
