  • How to define intelligence? Who has intelligence? Do plants have intelligence? Taking this series of questions as a starting point, we attempt to touch upon the concept of "intelligence" itself in the invitation unit of the exhibition. Botanist Stefano Mancuso has been advocating the concept of "plant intelligence" since 2005, viewing plants (plural) as an organic system for complex information processing through individual plants. Starting from the term "plant intelligence", we will continue to consider the concept of "species" and the position of humans in all things. The view that humans have long placed themselves at the top of the pyramid of species can be intuitively seen from an illustration in the Liber de Sapiente published in 1509. Aristotle's concept is presented in a graphical way: species in the world are arranged in a pyramid like pattern, with rocks at the bottom, plants above, animals above, and humans at the top - the corresponding word is intelligence, which is considered a characteristic of humanity.

At present, with the increasing attention to artificial intelligence, we also need to consider the broader sources of intelligence. Mancuso believes that if intelligence is defined as the ability to solve problems, it will generate more possibilities. Intelligence not only comes from humans, but also from nature itself, and can be more abstract "things" such as microorganisms, minerals, the sun and moon, and water bodies. Equality with things is a mentality; By tracing back to ancient wisdom such as "homogenization" or utilizing modern technology, we can gain a more diverse perspective. The artists invited in the exhibition reflect the creative inspiration brought about by this "non anthropocentrism" trend and stimulated by the combined efforts of science, technology, and art.

  • The multiple interpretation methods possessed by "intelligence" are also reflected in the grand plan of the Guan Shanyue Art Museum to digitally activate classic collections. The three works displayed in the collection unit of the exhibition involve themes related to "plants" - plum, lotus, and summer insects. However, the forms presented in the works use techniques related to "intelligence" technology such as noise algorithms, sound art, and ink animation. This includes a new audiovisual version of Mr. Guan Shanyue's classic theme "plum blossom" transformed into immersive art, artist Chen Xiangbo's "residual lotus" ink original work combined with noise algorithms in "New Autumn · Dawn Wind", and young artist Tang Bohua's award-winning visual work "Summer Insect Country" - a journey of summer insect country people seeking ice explained by the text of "Zhuangzi". This time, a new visual version and several clay plate manuscripts are displayed.
