  • On November 12, 2020, the "Walking Man - Wu Weishan between China and the World" exhibition, sponsored by the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government, organized by the Propaganda Department of the Shenzhen Municipal Party Committee, the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports, and the Shenzhen Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and co organized by the Shenzhen Guan Shanyue Art Museum, opened at the Guan Shanyue Art Museum.

The exhibition showcases 136 works by the famous sculptor Wu Weishan, including 101 sculptures and 35 paintings. Unlike previous exhibitions of Wu Weishan's art works, this exhibition will not only showcase his works of art, but also showcase a large amount of graphic and textual materials related to Wu Weishan's artistic creation and work experience. It will present to the audience the process of how an artist has transformed from a college student majoring in art to an internationally renowned artist under the cultivation of the Party since the reform and opening up.

Wu Weishan is a renowned sculptor with international influence. He pioneered the style of modern Chinese freehand sculpture and also proposed the theory of "freehand sculpture" and the "Eight Styles of Chinese Sculpture" for the first time. His creative style and theoretical perspective have a leading role in the development direction of Chinese sculpture at present. Wu Weishan is currently a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the Director of the China Art Museum, Vice Chairman of the China Artists Association, Chairman of the China Urban Sculptors Association, and a corresponding academician of the French Academy of Art. For many years, he has been vigorously promoting excellent traditional Chinese culture, committed to telling the story of China well in the international community through Chinese art works, promoting the dissemination of contemporary Chinese art to the world, and making important contributions to cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.

This exhibition is divided into six sections: "Searching for Dreams", "Casting Souls", "Literary Heart", "Speech", "Footprints", and "Responsibility".

The "Footprint" section mainly showcases Wu Weishan's fruitful achievements in creating a brand through "freehand brushwork", building a community through the mechanism of international alliances, speaking out for Chinese culture through international forums, and successfully "exporting" national culture and art on an international scale in an era full of hope and pursuit, fully reflecting his deep thinking on cultural dissemination. The "Responsibility" section showcases Wu Weishan's patriotism and contributions in fulfilling his social responsibilities through four parts: "fulfilling his duties with advice and suggestions", "advocating morality and art", "public welfare donations to give back to society", and "leading the value of social aesthetic education". It also showcases Wu Weishan's proposals and speeches at the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) since he served as a member and Standing Committee member of the CPPCC, and excerpts from Wu Weishan's proposals at CPPCC meetings over the years, speeches in important newspapers such as the People's Daily and Guangming Daily, and speeches at local high-level meetings to satisfy  the audience.

In this exhibition, classic works by Wu Weishan, such as "Marx" in Trier, Germany, "Dialogue Beyond Time and Space - Da Vinci and Qi Baishi" in the da Vinci Museum and Library in Italy, "Sleeping Boy" won the Pangolin Award from the British Portrait Sculptors Association, and important works exhibited at the National Museum of China, the National Art Museum, the National Theatre, the Nanjing Museum, and the Henan Ideal Country Cultural and Art Center, were all present. Many precious graphic and textual materials were also exhibited for the first time to the public.

These rich graphic and textual materials not only introduce Wu Weishan to the audience, but also serve as a microcosm of his personal experience, showcasing the shaping of human beings by the great era, the nourishment of excellent traditional culture, and the encouragement of artistic spirit. They convey the mindset and struggle of Chinese artists from the reform and opening up to the new era, who have "never forgotten the original, absorbed the outside world, and faced the future".
