The "When sleeping in spring, dreams wake up first——Exhibition of Gao Jianfu's Works", organized by the Guangzhou Art Museum and the Shenzhen Guan Shanyue Art Museum, and co organized by the Gao Jianfu Memorial Museum, opened on the afternoon of August 5, 2020 at the Guan Shanyue Art Museum in Shenzhen. A total of 103 Gao Jianfu's calligraphy and painting works were exhibited in this exhibition, all of which are collections of the Guangzhou Art Museum and will last until August 16.

Gao Jianfu (1879-1951) was an outstanding modern Chinese painter and art educator, and the main founder of the Lingnan School of Painting. He was one of the pioneers in the transition of modern Chinese painting from classical to modern. After the Xinhai Revolution, he gradually rose in the Chinese painting industry and eventually became a prominent leader and master of the painting world. The Lingnan Painting School he founded has also continued to grow and become a painting school with nationwide influence. Gao Jianfu believes that Chinese painting should progress with the progress of society and opposes the drawbacks of traditional Chinese painting since the end of the Qing Dynasty. He advocated the "art revolution", advocated drawing on the experience of western and eastern realism painting, and then melting the essence of art at all times and at home and abroad into a furnace to create a "new traditional Chinese painting" suitable for the new era. His idea has been summarized by later generations as "balancing the East and the West, blending ancient and modern", becoming the most important feature of the Lingnan School of Painting.

 In 2019, the "When sleeping in spring, dreams wake up first - Commemorating the 140th Anniversary of Gao Jianfu's Birthday Exhibition" planned and held by the Guangzhou Art Museum was awarded the Excellent Project of the National Art Museum Collection Exhibition Season by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. This time, the Guan Shanyue Art Museum and the Guangzhou Art Museum teamed up to bring the museum's collection of Gao Jianfu's artistic masterpieces to Shenzhen audiences, aiming to showcase Gao Jianfu's creative process of lifelong mechanical research and outstanding independent artistic style. It is worth emphasizing that Gao Jianfu was the teacher of Guan Shanyue. Holding a grand exhibition of him at the Guan Shanyue Art Museum is undoubtedly the best way to commemorate this master of the Lingnan School of Painting.
