The concept of public art has led contemporary artists to challenge the traditional mode of art production. Art has departed from the purposeless and utilitarian trajectory of traditional aesthetics, stepped out of isolation from social pulsation, and changed the relationship between subject and object, artist and audience. They have begun to think about how to intervene in communities through art, thus giving birth to a new type of art - community art. At the turn of the century, community art in China first emerged in the fields of architectural design and public art. Subsequently, more and more artists and art groups joined in, presenting it in the form of local immersive art projects, and forming a symbiotic relationship with the community or community.
This year is the 7th edition of "On the Road", and we have chosen the keyword "symbiosis" to organize the Chinese community art that has emerged in the past 20 years. Symbiosis in the biological world can be divided into various forms, such as symbiosis that benefits both parties, symbiosis that benefits more, symbiosis that harms more, and symbiosis that is unrelated. These diverse forms form an inseparable structural relationship between living organisms. In the current art ecology, there is undoubtedly a diverse symbiotic relationship between artists and communities, as well as between community art and art ecology, and the changes in this relationship subtly influence the structural relationship and development direction of the current art ecology. In particular, topics such as "the occurrence, artistic characteristics, and their creative and innovative significance in the development of contemporary art", "symbiotic visual culture and its production mechanism", "public visual reconstruction and collective memory generation", "white boxes and museums without walls" have attracted widespread attention in the art community.
However, due to the varying degrees of differences between various art projects in terms of creative subjects, artistic purposes, production methods, especially social targeting, the final presentation also reflects obvious regional characteristics. Therefore, this exhibition takes the distribution of Chinese community art as a clue and presents a comprehensive presentation of four sections: North China/Central China, South China/East China, Southwest, and Northwest. At the same time, considering the local and participatory nature of community art, this exhibition has set up four sub exhibition venues for long-term community art practice, namely Aohu Art Village, Handshake 302, Subway Art Museum, and 33 Contemporary Art Space, in addition to Guanshan Yue Art Museum. The aim is to form an organic structural relationship with the literature narrative inside the art museum, so as to present the face of Chinese community art more objectively and vividly.
