Speaker Chen Yanqing
PhD from the School of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University, Associate Professor at the Changjiang College of Art and Design, Shantou University, with a main research focus on traditional Chinese color theory and visual symbol theory. Published six academic monographs, including "Color of Ideas: A Study of Traditional Chinese Colors" (2015), "Interpreting Readers' Logic: Artistic Semiotics of Practical Analysis" (National Social Science Post funding Project, 2021), and "Ancient Colors of China: Twelve Issues on Chinese Colors" (funded by the National Publishing Fund and selected as a "Good Book of China" in 2024).
The colors in ancient Chinese figure paintings have never simply served the purpose of "visual" experience. In ancient images where there must be "speech" when writing, the "meaning" carried by colors is extremely complex. In images such as Xiao Zhao's "Zhongxing Ruiying Tu" in the Southern Song Dynasty, the phenomenon of color expression is even more typical. In these highly purposeful image engineering, the expression of color is not solely dependent on the object, but often becomes the main expression and protagonist of the image. This lecture starts with the "Zhongxing Ruiying Tu" and explores the color differences between the "six section version" and "twelve section version" of the "Ruiying Tu". Combining with the image colors in Song Dynasty painting, from the perspective of color expression, it reveals the historical, social, political, ethical, and ideal symbol production forms and means of Chinese color, that is, how color proves history.
